The Mariners Secure First Team Victory of Season

May 7th was about more than Spring Fling (big round of applause for Sarah V. and the MCA for putting on a fabulous community celebration!). Rocky Hill MS Tennis took on the Lincoln School at Alumni Courts at 4pm, playing 13 four-game prosets over an hour and a half, with your Mariners coming out on top in eleven of them.

All 23 Lincoln players got to play at least one match, with Lily Ventura ’31 (Warwick, RI) and Ryan Gillette ’30 (North Kingstown, RI) playing three matches each for Rocky Hill, pairing up at the end of the day to go the distance, winning 4-3. Spring Fling played the role of the happy distraction throughout the contest as many players from both teams wandered over to the festivities in between matches; some came back with treats, and some never made it back at all.

Luca Vares ’30 (Warwick, RI) played with the team for the first time this year and got two wins. Gavin Newell ’33 (Exeter, RI), Nick Mitchell ’31 (East Greenwich, RI), Audrey Monaghan ’31 (East Greenwich, RI), Jackie Sugarman ’32 (Smithfield, RI), Matt Sun ’31 (North Kingstown, RI), Fin LaPointe ’31 (Wakefield, RI), Ari Millikin ’31 (Warwick, RI), and James Palermo ’31 (Cumberland, RI) all won twice as well, as Gillette was our lone three-match winner on the day. The improvements, particularly in serving, were evident up and down the lineup, and the players have much to be proud of as we head into our final matches of the season.

Up next: May 12th at home against Wheeler, and May 22nd at Roger Williams Park for the end-of-season tournament.
