Mariners Have Strong Team Performance in Victory Over Lions

ROCKY HILL – 16, Lexington Christian Academy – 5

The Mariners improve to 2-2 on the season at home against the Lions on Tuesday, April 16th.

Ariana Hernandez ’25 (Cranston, RI) had 5 saves in net while the defensive unit stood out tremendously during 3 penalty kills.

The Mariners went 14 for 23 in draw control against the Lions’ circle unit with Captain Jeremi Morrison ’24 (East Greenwich, RI) credited for 11 and Emma Morrison ’28 (East Greenwich, RI) credited for 3. The circle unit, composed of the Morrisons and Captain Hadley Wheeler ’24 (Saunderstown, RI) along with support from Maddie Ruzzo ’26 (West Greenwich, RI) continued their strong performance throughout the season, playing a big factor in team possession.

The offensive unit really began to gel in this game, controlling the clock and protecting the ball. Eight players found the back of the net. Kaileigh Kelleher ’25 (Cranston, RI) led the scoring effort with 5 goals and 1 assist. E. Morrison had 4 goals and 2 assists. Captain Mackenzie Carney ’24 (East Greenwich, RI) had 2 goals. Ruzzo had a goal and 4 assists. J. Morrison had a goal and 2 assists. Wheeler, Izabella Macari ’26 (Warwick, RI), and Annalisa Gomes ’27 (Harrisville, RI), each had a goal on the day.

Macari and J. Morrison led the team in ground balls with 4 a piece. Carney, E. Morrison and Gomes had two ground balls each. Ruzzo, Captain Elizabeth Howard ’24 (Saunderstown, RI), Abby Millard ’27 (East Greenwich, RI), Tapiwa Gukutu ’25 (North Kingstown, RI), Katie O’Neil ’25 (Warwick, RI), and Brenna Samponaro ’28 (Wakefield, RI), each had a ground ball.

Wheeler, Carney, both Morrisons, and Ruzzo, all had 2 caused turnovers. Gomes, Howard, Macari, O’Neil and Delilah Tully ’26 (Warwick, RI), had one caused turnover.

The Mariners look to build on their success on Saturday, April 20th, when they host Dublin at 1:30 pm in conference play.
