East Greenwich, RI – The Rocky Hill Girls Basketball program took on SENE foe, Providence Country Day, at home on Friday afternoon.
Rocky Hill looked comfortable in their surroundings, after a 14 day layover, which they played three road games.
The first half was close throughout, as the Lady Mariners defense stifled PCD in the early stages of the half. Senior Andrea White (West Warwick, RI) led the offense charge as she contributed 5 of her team high 9 points in the opening frame, including a converted “and 1” opportunity.
Freshman Taylor Cote (Warwick, RI) also added mid-range baseline jumper to cap Rocky Hill’s scoring in the first half, which the Lady Mariners found themselves down 14-7.
In the second half, the Lady Mariners changed the momentum of the game going on a 11-1 run to take a three point advantage with under 7 minutes to play. Juniors Aviva Beringhause (Providence, RI) and Ptolemy Tassone (Exeter, RI) both chipped in with field goals, while freshman Jorday Lanowy (Newport, RI) knocked down the Lady Mariners lone 3pt field goal of the contest.
PCD retook the lead but late free throws by Cote and another putback by Beringhause cut the margin to one with 20 seconds to play.
However, RHS could not execute down the stretch and PCD snuck by with a 24-23 win.
The loss drops Rocky Hill’s record to 1-8 (0-7 NEPSAC) on the season.Coach DeSalvo noted “I was really encouraged with the way we came to play tonight. This team beat us by 34 points at Brown just 10 days ago and we gave them all they could handle tonight.” DeSalvo added “we have lots to build on from this experience and am proud of our ladies and their effort today.”
Rocky Hill next travels to Eagle Hill School (Hardwick, MA) on Wednesday, January 31st for a 4:30PM contest.
