9/27/17 – GV Soccer @ St. Andrew’s School

2-7 Loss

Prior to the start of the game, coaches and players from RHS and St. Andrew’s formed a circle and joined hands for 11 seconds of silence to honor the memory of Madeline Potts, the Chariho High School soccer player who unexpectedly passed away last weekend.

When the game started, St. Andrew’s took possession of the ball and immediately brought it into the end zone. During the first half, the Mariners struggled defensively and offensively. When the offense did get possession of the ball, the Mariners took shots on goal, but they were unable to score. At the half, RHS was down 7-0 and Captain Brianna Segerson ’18 saved 14 shots on goal.

After the half, the Mariners returned to the field with intensity and settled into their positions. Within the first few minutes of the second half, Tamira Lopes ’21 gained possession of the ball and scored RHS’ first goal. The RHS defense played their positions and communicated confidently to one another. The defense did not allow St. Andrew’s as many shots on goal as the first half. Brianna Segerson saved two shots on goal. In the last two minutes of the game, Captain Ptolemy Tassone ‘19 threw in to Emma Stokes ‘20 who made the assist to Tamira Lopes ‘22, scoring the second and final goal.

9/27/17 – BV Soccer vs. St. Andrew’s School

3-5 Loss

Rocky Hill School faced off against two-time NEPSAC champions St. Andrew’s on a hot, muggy afternoon. A set piece led to an early opportunity for the Mariners when captain Andrew Zito’s free kick was mishandled by the Saints goalkeeper.  Junior Jay-Juan Hayes was alert to the miscue, reacting quickly to slot the ball home to give RHS 1-0 lead. St. Andrew’s was quickly level however, and followed this up with two more unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead. Shortly before the half Jay-Juan Hayes struck again, this time collecting a loose ball near midfield and finishing a streaking run through the defense with a strong finish to pull the Mariners back within one. The second half was tighter affair, as both teams struggled to maintain their intensity in the humid conditions. Eventually St. Andrew’s was able to restore their 2 goal advantage off of a nice cross and header, but senior Lester Li pulled Rocky Hill back when his deflected strike found the back of the net, assisted by Graham Eilberg. Unfortunately the Mariners could not complete the comeback, and after yet another spectacular second half save by goalie Griffin Spinney, St. Andrew’s finished the game off by knocking home the rebound.

Man of the Match: Jay-Juan Hayes
