Catherine Washburn to Retire

Catherine Washburn, Rocky Hill School’s Director of Admission and Financial Assistance for 22 years, has announced her retirement effective after the 2017-2018 academic year.

In her own words:

“After 42 years of being involved in independent school education the time has come for me to retire next June. Serving as the Director of Admission and Financial Aid has been a great honor and privilege. I am grateful that during my 22 years at Rocky Hill School, I was afforded numerous opportunities for both professional and personal growth. Although my role as an educator has evolved over the years, one thing has always remained constant: my commitment to students. I understand that recruiting and enrolling students is something admission offices do in the aggregate, but ultimately the process takes place one family at a time. My priority has always been to ensure that the match between student and school is an appropriate and positive one. Having interviewed and enrolled over a thousand Rocky Hill students and their families, I can honestly say each and every one of them has enriched my life. I will cherish countless memorable moments of my time at Rocky Hill from camping on Dutch Island with the 8th grade, coaching varsity girls’ lacrosse to three league championships, forming a meaningful relationship with Project GOAL, painting a jungle mural for the preschoolers to enjoy, to establishing a vibrant international program. I have always felt the heart of a school is its people and I will truly miss the many extraordinary people whom I had the pleasure to work with during my tenure at Rocky Hill School.”

ACE faculty will present strategies to help students in all three divisions better comprehend various texts, from stories and short non-fiction books in the Lower School to the more demanding expository text and sophisticated novels in the Middle and Upper Schools. We will review some of the common skills needed for comprehension at any level and will provide text-specific strategies. This gathering also promises to be a terrific chance for families to share what has worked well with their individual children.

Halloween 2017

Mrs. Cicchese‘s eighth grade English class invited Mrs. MacDonald‘s fifth grade class to collaborate on some spooky Halloween stories. Each group chose a setting, conflict, and some characters out of a Halloween bag and let their creative juices flow!

Mrs. Piccoli spent some time in the Kindergarten class to work with the students on making pumpkins out of beeswax. She also shared a couple of her favorite Halloween stories.
